(Layers of Time)
[Exhibition Preface] Layers of Time
Time is invisible, yet it always leaves quiet traces upon our lives. The fleeting moments that brush past us every day seem to vanish instantly, but when we quietly look back, we find them neatly layered within our memories. These accumulated memories shape who we are today and complete the beautiful texture of our lives.
My work is an endeavor to capture this invisible flow of time through painting. In my studio, I draw rectangular grid patterns on canvas, upon which I repeatedly layer various colors, lines, and translucent paints. These squares filling the screen are not mere geometric shapes. They are the precious fragments of memories I wish to cherish, as well as the traces of numerous relationships and connections I have formed throughout my life.
The calm blue tones and the intense, complementary red hues within the paintings represent the temperatures of the emotions I have felt through life. The cold memories of lonely and desolate days turned into blue, while the days of passionate love and burning enthusiasm became red. These contrasting colors harmonize within a single canvas, creating a pleasant tension and balance.
I repeatedly apply thick layers of paint, cover them up, and sometimes scrape them away to create emptiness. This process of building time upon the canvas with utmost devotion is akin to weaving fabric. The accumulated layers of paint do not completely conceal one another; instead, they softly glow through. The way past time permeates present time, which then becomes the foundation for the future, closely resembles our lives. After all, human life is a texture woven from the layering of countless experiences, emotions, and connections.
This exhibition, Layers of Time, invites us to gaze together at the invisible texture of time hidden behind the solid-looking rectangular grids. I hope you can lay down your complex thoughts before my paintings and gently overlap your own precious memories between the square gaps. May this be a comforting journey where you tenderly rediscover the warm traces of time in your heart, which had been forgotten in the hustle and bustle of daily life.
